 Tora Augestad

Mezzosoprano

Tora Augestad’s versatility inspires composers, directors, conductors, and other musicians. Vocally, she is difficult to categorise – as a performer, she is flexible, expressive, precise, scenically convincing, and possesses an unusually strong personality. In 2004, she founded the ensemble Music for a While, known for its genre-crossing chamber music. Since 2010, Augestad has collaborated with Swiss director Christoph Marthaler on a total of 13 productions. She has an extensive European career and has been a soloist with orchestras both domestically and internationally.

Augestad was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2015. In 2018, she was named Performer of the Year by the Norwegian Society of Composers for her contribution to Norwegian contemporary music. In March 2019, her portrait album Portraying Passion with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra won the Spellemann Award for Classical Album of the Year.

In the autumn of 2019, her duo album Dialogues was released. Past & Presence is a composer portrait by Henrik Hellstenius, for which he received the Spellemann / Tonos Composer Award in 2021. In the summer of 2022, Augestad composed the commissioned work Til Verda for the Sēnja Children’s Festival.

Augestad was the festival profile at Nordland Music Festival in 2023 and at the Ålesund Chamber Music Festival in 2025. In the autumn of 2024, she released the album I et landskap together with Mathias Eick and Torbjørn Dyrud, where the three have set Norwegian poetry to music.

In spring 2025, her album Ingenting forsvinner was released, featuring her and the New Norwegian Brass Quintet performing music by Marcus Paus set to texts by Ole Paus. Her own compositions will be released on the album VårvillI in autumn 2025. In 2026, two other albums will be released: her next project with the Oslo Philharmonic and Schubert Lounge with the Oslo Sinfonietta.
