Elegance and virtuosity, curiosity and a strong desire to communicate the music are qualities often highlighted when describing Amalie Stalheim’s playing.
The award-winning Swedish-Norwegian cellist, born in Bergen in 1993, has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Ankara Presidential Symphony Orchestra and Iceland Symphony Orchestra, among others.
She is the recipient of both the Swedish and Norwegian Soloist Prizes (2018 and 2021), the Norwegian Society of Composers’ Performer of the Year award (2024), and was named a Rising Star by BBC Music Magazine in 2022.
Alongside performing the traditional cello concerto repertoire, Amalie regularly commissions and gives world premieres of new works by contemporary composers. She has collaborated with some of today’s leading composers, including Kaija Saariaho, Missy Mazzoli, Anders Hillborg, Lasse Thoresen, Britta Byström and Daniel Kidane.
Stalheim is the founder of the mentoring programme Klassisk link, developed in collaboration with the Bergen International Festival. From 2025 to 2027, she is a guest teacher and Artist in Residence at the Malmö Academy of Music.
Amalie plays a cello made by G. B. Guadagnini in 1783, generously on loan from Dextra Musica.
