CONVOLUTION for double bass and electronics

Hala Alonso

performing musicians

Hara Alonso is a Stockholm-based pianist, composer and sound artist from Spain.

Her compositional process is grounded in performance and corporeal experience, exploring multisensory practices, memory, space and imagination as instruments for sound-making.

The piece “CONVOLUTION for double bass and electronics” has been commissioned by the Frontside Chamber Music Society for performance at the 2026 festival and is dedicated to Niek de Groot that also will be performing at the world premiere on January 18th.

The composer Hara Alonso has made this interesting description of the piece and her creative process:
“Convolution,” for double bass and electronics, is a sound experiment based on the electroacoustic concept of cross-synthesis. This process involves combining two sound sources in a way that imparts the tonal characteristics of one sound to the other. Building on this principle, the original sound of the double bass is manipulated (or convolved) by the sound of a specially prepared piano. The result is an expanded spectral enveloping where the tonal range of the double bass is broadened and enriched by the electronic component, leaving only the physical gesture perceptible.
