Terry Riley – In C

20/01/2019

Music demonstrates its immense power when different generations and nationalities play music together, and when professional musicians with extensive resumes meet children (the youngest was only six years) who have just begun to acquaint themselves with their instruments.

In the final concert of the 2019 festival, all festival musicians performed together with Ron Davis Alvarez and his Dream Orchestra, consisting of unaccompanied minors from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.

The piece they played was “In C” by the American composer Terry Riley. “In C” was written in 1964 and is based on a series of short melodic fragments that can be repeated according to the musicians’ own abilities and ideas. The work is the first minimalist composition to have a lasting impact on public consciousness. In 2022, the first recording from 1968 was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
